My phone is a Qualcomm QCP 2700. I had to upgrade to Firmware 3.0.9, and this is only accomplished at a SprintPCS store. I also purchased the Qualcomm Data Connectivity Kit (Mfr. Part No.TXDTA0109) for $79.00 at http://www.qualcomm.com. Qualcomm Data Connectivity Kit includes a Cellular-RS232 cable, plus additional software for synching phone settings and the like and is not required for the operation. The Qualcomm Data Connectivity Kit works with QCP-820, 1920 and 2700 phones. The Navas Group has written a similar guide for Samsung Phones entitled Data mode with Sprint PCS and Samsung SCH-8500
As I learned a little more about the setup, I found out I could have purchased the serial cable for $30 at http://www.phonessentials.com. Additionally, Compaq touts a Cellular-RS232 cable for their Aero2100 series for $26 (Mfr. Part No. 140143-B21) Keep in mind, the Qualcomm Data Connectivity Kit contains a null modem adapter that is necessary for the operation when connecting with your PDA.
My cellular provider is SprintPCS . The Free and Clear $30/300 plan is currently the best deal for service. Also the Wireless Web Option can be added to this account for $9.99 (includes 50 Wireless Web Minutes, and 50 SMS messages.) The wireless web option is also not required for the operation. You can just "pay as you go" on the Sprint CDMA data network, but be warned you will be charged 39 cents/minute for data access.
My laptop is a Compaq Presario 1240. The "Modem" is setup in dialup networking on Windows 95/98. Not a modem at all, in fact the QCP 2700 sends data signals over the Sprint CDMA network to a pool of Sprint DSP's.Windows 98 includes a modem profile for "Qualcomm CDMA Wireless Modem."
To create a new modem profile in Windows 95/98 open the control panel and double click "Modems." The window that appears should contain a listing for the modem currently in your machine, if one is installed. To add the cellular phone to the list choose "Add." In Windows 98 select Qualcomm and Qualcomm CDMA Wireless Modem from the list that follows. "Generic Hayes" with the Port settings set to a maximum of 19,200 should work fine as well.
On the PDA side, the "modem" is setup in the communications program using "Generic Hayes." I also had to edit some of the default dialing settings to remove additional digits from the dialing string. Again, remember when connecting your PDA to the RS232 Cellular cable, you will need a null modem adapter like the one included in the Qualcomm Data Connectivity Kit.
